Wednesday April 7, 14, and 21st 6PM-8PM

This class will introduce fundamental chart work, dead reckoning, plotting skills and proper usage of tools, including log keeping methods necessary for prudent navigation. The goal for the student will be to understand how to plot a vessel’s position on a chart while underway. Electronics such as GPS, Depth Sounder, Radar and VHF Radio will be touched on as they aid significantly in the above piloting skills. However, chart work and plotting will be the focus of this exercise.

The art of navigation demonstrated will be for near coastal piloting and the student will leave with information to continue this learning process.

This class is open to the public. The class only fee is $50.00/person and includes charts. There is an optional choice for “Class and take home tool kit” ($105.00/person) this will include a charting tool kit for you to take home and practice what you have learned. The kit will include: Charts, Parallel Rule, Dividers, Pencil and Eraser. There will be a class maximum of 6 participants.

Covid precautions: This course has a limit of 6 participants. All participants and staff must wear a mask while in the SEAS building. The program will run in an area of the building that allows for social distancing and ventilation will be a consideration. Hand sanitizer will be available for use. Participants will be able to keep their charts and tools will be sanitized if shared.
